Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

The Bridging Program, is divided into 4 modules – Pharmacology, Professional Practice, Management of Drug Distribution Systems and Product Preparation. The content, which is designed to provide current technicians with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to take on the additional job responsibilities of a regulated technician, was developed nationally and then modified as required for each province. Each module, which is approximately 40 hours long is offered online as well as in classroom at various locations across British Columbia.

Technicians who feel that they already have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to challenge, through an exam, a particular bridging module may do so through a process referred to as Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR).

Please view complete Student Policies for the Pharmacy Technician Bridging Program (British Columbia).

Pre-requisites & Requirements

  • Prior to registering for one of the following modules, a pharmacy technician must pre-register with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia (CPBC).  The CPBC pre-registration form can be found on the CPBC website. Please click here to view details.

  • Product Preparation PLAR - One additional component is required for the Product Preparation PLAR: Either before or after the PLAR exam, a pharmacy technician must complete two components (extemporaneous and sterile) and have their work checked and signed by an assessor.  This signed checklist must be submitted to the College of Pharmcists of BC. Please view the Product Preparation PLAR Notice for additional details.
  • Management of Drug Distribution Systems PLAR - There will be a structured practical evaluation following the Management of Drug Distribution Systems PLAR (and managed by the College of Pharmacists of BC) to verify the learners ability to consistently perform accurate product release in the workplace (independent double check).
